What a Codex reset actually is
A Codex reset is not extra credit and it is not a plan upgrade. OpenAI's servers send an absolute timestamp with each usage report; when a reset lands, the percentage on that window returns to 100% and the clock restarts.

There are two clocks people mix up. The 5-hour window is the short budget shared by the CLI, IDE, desktop app and cloud chats. The weekly window is the ceiling behind it. Clearing one does not refill the other. OpenAI has published 5-hour message ranges by plan and model; it has not published the size of the weekly cap for any plan.
Separately, Tibo Sottiaux (@thsottiaux) sometimes announces a goodwill reset for every paid Codex and ChatGPT Work account. That is the event this site forecasts. It is irregular. Milestone days, incidents, and launches are common reasons in the public record — not a calendar you can plan a sprint around.
Your own weekly rollover is account-specific. Community reports say it anchors to the first request after the previous reset, which is why this site asks you to paste /status instead of pretending one global countdown fits all.
Run /status in the Codex CLI and read the percentage left and reset time from the limit-window rows it actually prints. If a 5-hour row is missing, do not infer one from this page.
Seven days on its own clock, in the Weekly limit row of /status. There is no universal weekly moment. Community reports say each account anchors to its first request after the previous reset.
OpenAI does not publish it. The pricing page says only that additional weekly limits may apply. Anyone quoting an exact weekly message cap is guessing.
The UTC answer is at the top of this page. The radar watches @thsottiaux and marks a reset verified only when the wording says so.
No. They are independent budgets. If weekly is exhausted you need the weekly rollover, a goodwill reset, a banked reset, or credits.
Ordinary ChatGPT chat is separate. Codex, ChatGPT Work, ChatGPT for Excel and Workspace Agents share one agentic pool. A heavy Work session will drain Codex budget.
A reset saved until you redeem it. The grant does not refresh usage. A full redemption resets both windows. Referral grants normally use a 30-day window unless the offer says otherwise. See the banked reset guide.
Verified announcements cluster from late UTC afternoon into the first hours after midnight — US afternoon. Day of week is nearly uniform.
OpenAI typically lets the current turn finish, then blocks new turns. Wait, spend a banked reset, buy credits, switch to Luna, or move the task to an API key.
No. It never touches your OpenAI account. Real numbers live in Codex / Work Analytics or /status. Countdowns, notifications and calendar exports stay in your browser.
